Under the direction of the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, C.
F.
, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic will inspect automotive equipment to determine the necessary corrective action to be taken for repair.
He/She shall make major/minor repairs to automotive, farm and construction equipment including but not limited to major engine overhauls, tune-ups, relining/adjusting brakes, wheel alignments, transmission and differential replacement/repair, and minor body repair.
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will also operate and maintain all automotive shop equipment, give advice in the selection and storage of automotive parts and equipment, estimate the cost of automotive repairs, instruct operators in the proper operation and servicing of their equipment.
He/She will do minor welding and brazing work, keep simple records and compile reports, test drive vehicles on public streets, instruct and supervise unskilled assistants in their work, maintain order and supervise the conduct of persons committed to the Department of Corrections, prevent escapes and injury by these persons to themselves or others or to property, maintain the security of the work area and materials, inspect premises and conduct searches of inmates for contraband such as weapons or illegal drugs.
