Maintenance Manager, Armtec Defense Technologies
Armtec Defense Technologies (Armtec) is an operating unit of the Transdigm Group (NYSE: TDG), an industry leader in aerospace and defense products and services.
Armtec is comprised of three business units producing subcomponents for ordnance in Coachella, CA; decoy countermeasure flares in Camden AR; and radar countermeasure chaff in Lillington NC.

This position is staffed in Coachella, at Armtec’s world-class, sole-source production facility for felted fiber nitrocellulose combustible cartridge cases for medium and large caliber military ammunition; and pyrophoric payloads for training grenades.

Industry: Manufacturing Combustible Ordnance and Countermeasures Job Overview Title: Maintenance Manager Job Family: Operations Management Reports to: Director of Operations Works with: Mid-level managers and supervisors, employees Location: Coachella, California Type: Full-Time Job Summary The Maintenance Manager is responsible for the functional performance of the Armtec maintenance and die maintenance departments in terms of safety, work quality, throughput, cost, and employee engagement.
Our maintenance department exists to ensure equipment and tooling is always available and operational to support our production activities.
We need our maintenance team to relentlessly drive down our overall daily downtime and increase operational availability of our equipment.
This means working with supervisors to ensure that the maintenance team gets repair tickets completed safely and quickly to reduce actual downtime and time operating under abnormal conditions, and also Preventive Maintenance activities get done at the right frequency without interrupting production to reduce the risk of downtime occurring in the first place.
A key responsibility of this role is to drive continuous improvement in the department.
To get better we know we need to: Expand predictive maintenance capabilities.
Clarify and detail procedures to ensure consistency of maintenance work and speed troubleshooting.
Improve our spare parts tracking and availability; and incorporate an automated spare part tracking and replenishment system into our Maintenance CMMS.
Improve training and development programs for our maintenance personnel.
Develop/deploy electronic maintenance tracking and technical data provision systems.
All so that we can make our maintenance activities more efficient and effective.
Primary Responsibilities Review and analyze maintenance data and develop and execute targeted improvement plans.
Monitor and reduce production equipment downtime.
Maintain a strong safety focus and an accident-free maintenance department.
Maintain a near zero backlog of repair tickets and preventive maintenance workorders.
Monitor for unsafe work practices in the department and drive improvements to procedures and work behaviors to improve safety and reduce injury risk.
Improve and deploy structured training programs and leveling/promotion criteria for all maintenance staff roles.
Be a strong and visible leader for the department and promote key values throughout the organization.
Develop and execute plans for improving productivity in the maintenance department, improving throughput, and reducing cycle times.
Improve the consistency and quality of maintenance activities, ensuring that equipment is returned to full working order every time.
Mentor our supervisors and key maintenance staff and develop them into our next generation of strong maintenance leaders.
Improve scheduling and staffing of our maintenance resources to improve service to our production teams.
Monitor progress on emergency maintenance calls and respond as needed to escalate and/or expand the troubleshooting/repair team to ensure quick recovery.
Drive down the cost to perform our maintenance activities.
Maintain the highest ethical standards, even when challenged from above.
Understand and live by Armtec’s ethics and business conduct policies.
Qualifications Must have at least a four-year college degree, and 5 years of previous maintenance management or related technical experience Must have strong leadership and team management skills, Must have thorough knowledge of industrial maintenance functions and methods.
Excellent communications skills both oral and written are required.
Must be able to manage a computerized maintenance management system, and read schematics, blueprints, and drawings.
Must be dependable, responsible, and accurate and have the ability to deal with people effectively.
