JOB TITLE: Heavy Equipment Operator and Road Maintenance
DEPARTMENT: Facilities
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
SALARY: $24.
84 non-negotiable SUMMARY : Under the direction of the Facilities-Public Works Director (“Director”) this position will primarily be responsible for operating heavy equipment for construction and road maintenance (drive, maneuver, or control the heavy machinery used to construct roads, bridges, buildings, and other structures) .
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Including but not limited to the following duties and responsibilities.
Transports and maintains heavy equipment such as dump truck, backhoe, skid steer, and water truck to push, pull, pile or load materials such as sand, gravel, asphalt, earth, or refuse.
Operate construction equipment such as clearing brush, cleaning, canals, laterals, and earth ditches.
Load and unload heavy equipment from trailers under extreme field conditions with occasional assistance from Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanics and other Project staff.
Operation and maintenance of small engine equipment to include but not limited to chainsaws, compressor, blower, weed whacker, generator, and striper to name a few.
Pick up trash and debris from Tribal road shoulders and replace road signs.
Work after normal working hours for emergencies SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Non-supervisory OTHER DUTIES: Attend meetings Attend mandatory on-the-job trainings Travel as required to perform duties Perform related duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

K NOWLEDGE OF: Operating heavy equipment and machinery in all types of terrain Road and bridge construction and maintenance methods A BI L I T Y TO: Apply cultural sensitivity to cultural relevant programming, primarily Native American Handling and use different sets of controls for operation of the equipment and attachments Maneuver heavy equipment about in confined areas Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other departments Communicate effectively both orally and in writing Operate standard office equipment including a computer and assigned software Work with minimal supervision on assigned duties EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: An equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.
For a high school diploma/equivalency certificate, a ratio of 1:1 will be used for applicants with less than a high school diploma/equivalency certificate.
This means that one year of paid full-time work experience equals one year of high school education.
High school diploma or equivalency certificate and three (3) years’ experience in heavy labor associated with road structures to demonstrate the relevant knowledge, skills and abilities of the job.
OR An applicant that has completed an 8th grade education will need to have four (4) years of full-time work experience to substitute for the required high school diploma/equivalency certificate and three (3) years’ experience in heavy labor associated with road structures to demonstrate the relevant knowledge, skills and abilities of the job.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: To perform and to continue to be qualified for this position, the requirements listed below must be met at a time of hire or may be obtained within a specific amount of time depending on the position requirements.
Costs for required certifications, licenses, and registration are to be covered by employee, unless offered by the Tribe.
D riving is required in the course and scope of employment.
Applicant must maintain prior to hiring and throughout employment a valid California Class C driver’s license and insurability under the Tribe’s vehicle insurance policy May receive on-the-job training related to Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Driving a vehicle on hazardous roads Predominantly outdoors, in all kinds of weather, terrain, and with footing conditions from dry to solid we, deep mud, and around water Breathing conditions are generally good, but temperatures vary from mild to over 100⁰F May be exposed to possible injury because of the risk associated with the operation of heavy equipment TMDCI Member/Indian Preference Policy: The Tribe shall, to the greatest extent feasible, give preference in employment to Indian applicants who meet the required qualifications in accordance with applicable law, including the TERO Ordinance.
“Indian preference in employment” as used in this policy, applies in all aspects of the employment relationship including, hiring, termination of employment, promotion, training, transfer, and related issues.
