JOB DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to perform skilled duties in the operation of a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment, to perform heavy physical labor and a variety of manual tasks in the construction and maintenance area; and to do related work as required.
All construction personnel are required to provide a minimum of one week emergency stand-by service, and overtime as may be assigned.

DISTINGUISHED FROM LOWER RANGE POSITION(S):
Duties assigned to the Equipment Operator position are the same as those of a Water Service Worker I and Water Service Worker II.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
In addition to performing the duties of a Water Service Worker I and II, the Equipment Operator: operates diesel and/or gasoline powered earthmoving and trenching equipment such as tractors, loaders, backhoes, excavators, dozers and trucks; uses and changes equipment attachments to perform excavating, earth moving, loading, leveling, and backfilling assignments; excavates sewer and water lines for repairs and backfills excavation work; cleans, maintains, and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment; performs heavy and semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and labor work in the same fashion as the Water Service Worker I and II when the nature of the job does not require constant equipment operation.

Experience:
Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and ability is considered to be qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be to have one year of experience in the operation of light earth moving and construction equipment, as well as having achieved the status of the Agency’s Water Service Worker II.
License(s):
Possession of a valid Class A driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles for use of operating Agency vehicles and equipment required in the fulfillment of the job duties for this position, with an acceptable driving record.
Knowledge:
Use and functions of light and heavy power-driven equipment used in the Agency's maintenance and construction activities; operating characteristics, maintenance requirements and basic repair of power-driven equipment including, but not limited to, backhoes, loaders, trucks, and tractors; water distribution, wastewater collection and recycled water distribution facilities, including mains, service lines, hydrants, meters, and valves; the use and operation of a variety of hand tools, power equipment, pipe laying and fitting, concrete work, water meter and valve installation, and general maintenance work; relevant safety precautions and procedures.
Ability:
Operate assigned equipment with skill and in a safe manner; perform a variety of excavating, earth moving, backfilling, trenching, and construction assignments; repair, install and maintain water distribution facilities, including mains, service lines, hydrants, meters and valves; lay and fit pipe, mix pour and finish cement, and install valves and meters; perform heavy physical labor requiring strength, dexterity and agility; must be able to carry, push, pull, reach and lift equipment, parts and supplies weighing up to 90 lbs.
; stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, and climbs during field maintenance, repair and installation work; to use or operate a variety of hand tools, power equipment and vehicles commonly used in water service maintenance and construction; understand and carry out instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
