Position Summary The Assistant/Teacher is responsible for the supervision, care and nurturing of children in the program.
The Assistant/Teacher is responsible for helping the children with their homework and for the preparation and involvement of activities.
Essential Functions In cooperation with the Officers/Coordinator, develop overall objectives for classroom activities in light of the developmental needs of the children, including planning, supervising and implementing activities for the children, in person and virtually.
Focus the program activities to meet the needs of each individual child, with concern for handicaps, talents, individual style and pace of learning, cultural and social-economic backgrounds, and treating each child with respect, dignity and individual concern.
Assist students with corps programming, not limited to troops, SAY club, sports, etc.
Submit requests for materials, supplies and equipment as needed to supervisor well in advance.
Assist with handling of ASP program fees and turn in to office for processing; including collecting payments, writing receipts, and creating and maintain files records.
Assist, plan and or lead child gradations, musicals, parties and other events.
Attend all staff meetings and in-house trainings or conferences designed to enhance professional growth and development as directed.
Assist the coordinator in the training of volunteers, aides and helpers.
Attend Open Houses, parent’s conferences, and other special events.
Promote the active involvement of parents with their children during program hours.
Be responsible for the rooms the program will use, including arrangements appearance, neatness and including necessary housekeeping duties.
Be aware of your responsibility for the health, care, safety and security of all children, staff and volunteers in the program.
Report any potential or harmful situations, to the Supervisor, immediately.
Know and follow Salvation Army procedures which will include but are not limited to: Report your absence, illness, etc.
Assist with supervising children in our day camp setting, as assigned, during school breaks and summers.
Perform all other duties as may be assigned.
Working Conditions Ability to walk, stand, bend squat climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis.
Ability to be able to lift up to 40lbs.
Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as file cabinet drawers and reach overhead.
Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone.
Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent and provide copies at time of hire.
Must have two (2) years’ experience in the area of but not limited to working with children, which will provide knowledge and skills needed to carry out an effective program.
Meet all health, safety, and criminal/fingerprint clearance regulations.
Must be able to read, write and communicate well in English.
Spanish speaking helpful.
Maintain First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to communicate effectively; ability to interact with co-workers, management, leadership and the public.
Ability to present oneself in a professional manner.
Interpersonal and Organizational skills required Must have a philosophy of education and child development which is consistent with that of The Salvation Army Davis Center.
Must have the ability to work with children, parents, and staff in capacity of leadership, coaching, and education including but not limited to: Ability to relate joyfully and sensitivity to children of all ages.
Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently.
Ability to handle security and crisis situations calmly.
Ability to provide constant and continual supervision.
Ability to engage and maintain a child’s interest in activities.
